When a child falls behind, hiring a tutor is a natural next step — and for many children it helps. But parents of children with genuine learning disorders often notice something frustrating: months of tutoring produce modest, temporary gains, and the same struggles return. Understanding the difference between tutoring and remediation explains why.
Tutoring treats the subject, not the mechanism
Traditional tutoring is built to reinforce academic content: re-teaching a math concept, drilling spelling words, reviewing a reading passage. That is exactly right for a child who missed material or needs extra repetition. But a learning disorder is not a knowledge gap — it is a difference in how the brain processes information. A dyslexic child who cannot reliably map sounds to letters will not be cured by reading more books, any more than a nearsighted child improves by looking harder. More repetition of a skill the brain is not yet equipped to perform can build frustration faster than mastery.
Not all tutoring is created equal
There is an important exception. Structured, evidence-based reading programs such as Orton-Gillingham are specifically designed for dyslexia and use explicit, multisensory, systematic instruction. Delivered by a properly trained specialist, this kind of intervention is far more effective than generic homework help. The problem is that much of what is marketed as 'tutoring' is general academic support delivered by well-meaning but non-specialized tutors, and parents often cannot easily tell the difference until many sessions — and dollars — have passed.
The missing piece: underlying cognitive skills
Reading, writing, and math all rest on a foundation of cognitive skills — working memory, processing speed, attention, auditory and visual processing, and logic. When one or more of these is weak, academic instruction alone tends to stall. This is why a child can work with a tutor for a year, show a bump on the last worksheet, and slide back over the summer: the scaffolding was propped up, but the foundation was never reinforced.
Questions worth asking a prospective tutor
Are you trained in a specific, evidence-based method for my child's diagnosis (for example, a structured-literacy program for dyslexia)?
Are you helping my child build a skill, or mainly helping them get through assignments?
How will we know the gains are lasting rather than tied to your sessions?
